There is a young maiden, she lives all alone,
She lives all alone on the shore O;
There is nothing she can find to comfort her mind,
But to roam all alone on the shore, shore, shore,
But to roam all alone on the shore O.

'Twas of the young captain who sailed the salt sea,
That the winds blow high, blow low O;
I will die, I will die, the young captain did cry,
If I don't have that maid on the shore, shore, shore,
If I don't have that maid on the shore O.

Well, I have lots of silver, I have lots of gold,
I have lots of costly ware O;
I'll divide, I'll divide with my jolly ship's crew,
If they row me that maid on the shore, shore, shore,
If they row me that maid on the shore O.

After much persuasion, they got her aboard,
Let the wind blow high, blow low O;
They replaced her away in his cabin below,
Here's adieu to all sorrow and care, care, care,
Here's adieu to all sorrow and care O.

They replaced her away in his cabin below,
Let the wind blow high, blow low O;
She's so pretty and neat, she's so sweet and complete,
She sung captain and sailors to sleep, sleep, sleep,
She sung captain and sailors to sleep O.

Then she robbed him of silver, she robbed him of gold,
She robbed him of costly ware O;
Then took his broad sword instead of an oar,
And paddled away to the shore, shore, shore,
And paddled away to the shore O.

Well, me men must be crazy, me men must be mad,
Me men must be deep in despair O;
For to let you away from my cabin so gay,
And to paddle your way to the shore, shore, shore,
And to paddle your way to the shore O.

Well, your men was not crazy, your men was not mad,
Your men was not deep in despair O;
I deluded your sailors as well as yourself,
I'm a maiden again on the shore, shore, shore,
I'm a maiden again on the shore O.

Well, there is a young maiden she lives all alone,
She lives all alone on the shore O;
There is nothing she can find to comfort her mind,
But to roam all alone on the shore, shore, shore,
But to roam all alone on the shore O.

####.... Variant of British broadside ballads, The Maid On The Shore, The Fair Maid By The Sea Shore, and The Sea Captain [Laws K27] American Balladry From British Broadsides (G Malcolm Laws, 1957). This fo'c's'le (forecastle) shanty or forebitter was first published as an 1859 entry in the journal from the whaling schooner, Ocean Rover, out of Nantucket, Massachusetts ....####
This variant was arranged and recorded by Stan Rogers (Fogarty's Cove, trk#4, 1977, Barnswallow Records, LP, Canada, produced by Paul Mills).

An excellent variant was recorded as The Maid On The Shore by The Once from their premier album (The Once trk#3, 2010, produced by Mark Neary and The Once. Recorded by Don Ellis at Fat Tracks Studios, St John's, and by Mark Neary at Great Big Studios, St John's).

A variant was also collected by Barry Taylor and published as The Maid On The Shore in his Great Canadian Tunebook.

Another variant was collected by Kenneth Peacock in 1958 from Mrs Thomas (Annie) Walters [1896-1986] of Rocky Harbour, NL, and published as The Maid On The Shore O in Songs Of The Newfoundland Outports, Volume 1, pp.296-297, by The National Museum Of Canada (1965) Crown Copyrights Reserved.

A variant was also recorded as The Maid On The Shore by Stephanie Brazil as a bonus track on her mother Judy Brazil's album (Dreams Of Home, trk#15, 2013 CD, produced and engineered by Kevin Collins of Sawyer Hill Productions, Placentia, NL).

Other variants were recorded by:
Omar Blondahl (Once Again For Newfoundland, trk#12, 1967, Melbourne Records, Montreal, Quebec).
Omar Blondahl (Famous Songs Of Newfoundland, trk#9, 1978, Rodeo Records, Peterborough, Ontario).
Anita Best (The Colour Of Amber / Anita Best, Pamela Morgan, trk#10, 1991, Amber Music, Topsail, NL).

A fo'c's'le (forecastle) shanty or forebitter was usually sung by resting sailors gathered about the forebitts, a structure near the bow where crew quarters and anchor chains were located.
