As I was walking down the road,
I spied a cozy neat abode,
A half door standing open wide,
a welcome to come in there.
God rest you kindly here, I said,
when a fair colleen popped out her head,
God bless you kindly, sir, she said,
come in and close the half door.
She removed the upper half of the door,
and set it down upon the floor,
I wondered what she did it for,
I couldn't understand her.
She then proceeded to dance a reel,
and upon the door the click of her heel,
Resounded clear from stern to keel,
she pleased a Newfoundlander.
I asked her, Maid, will you marry me?
I'd gladly, sir, but can't you see,
I'm much too young for the likes of thee,
come back when I am older.
'Twas when I was taking my leave of the dear,
she whispered softly in my ear,
I pray you'll come again in a year,
and this is what I told her:
Please then I'll be coming down the road,
to visit your cozy, neat abode,
With the half door standing open wide,
a welcome to come in there.
Farewell, my darling now, I said,
and the fair colleen withdrew her head,
God guide you kindly, sir, she said,
I'll wait within the half door.
