Oh, fishin' in a dory off the coast of Newfoundland,
No gold mines but cod lines,
it's the life that's really grand;
The scoff of fish and brewis,
it's the life that I would choose,
Fishin' in a dory in the mornin'.

Oh, fishin' in a dory off the banks of Newfoundland,
Yarnin', fish swarmin', you're actin' like a man;
If the tide is not too strong,
then with you there's nothin' wrong,
Fishin' in a dory in the mornin'.

Wid ya buddy on the cuddy
and the fire of birch wood,
Fatback fryin' you're enjoyin',
the black tea tastes so good;
There's music in your laugh,
killin' big ones with a gaff,
Fishin' in a dory in the mornin'.

Oh, fishin' in a dory off the coast of Newfoundland,
Where Nickie and Dickie and no one gives a hang;
If you catch a shark or whale,
then there's no mountie on your trail,
Fishin' in a dory in the mornin'.

Hard tackie and baccy, you're a gay and happy man,
Fishin' in a trap skiff off the coast of Newfoundland;
Where seabirds cry and wail,
and the wind gets in your sail,
Fishin' in a dory in the mornin'.

Oh, fishin' in a dory off the rock of Wild Cove Bight,
Foggy and groggy, the Carson heaves in sight;
If that million dollar ship,
then she should offer you a lift,
There'll be glory in your dory in the mornin'.

Cussin' and fussin' off the point of Baccalieu,
Lop and tumble makes you grumble,
and the foghorn goes boo-hoo;
There you'll need no overcoat,
but a good manila rope,
Fishin' in a trap skiff in the mornin'.

Oh, fishin' in a sailboat, and the dawnin' gettin' red,
I have no roof for shelter, the ocean is me bed;
Clear the man and pawn me soul,
now me grapnel is afoul,
Fishin' in a dory in the mornin'.

Hurry and gurry, I'm headin' home at last,
Get me auld sou'wester, stick up me jigger mast;
Now me auld six cantal punt,
let me down that's what she won't,
There's story in me dory, there's glory in me dory,
I'm a tory in me dory in the mornin'.

This variant arranged and recorded by Ray Johnson.

The video above features an arrangement recorded by Ray Johnson (The Newfoundland I Love / Ray Johnson & The Sou'Westers, 1973 LP, trk#9, Audat Records, Oshawa, ON); and (Newfie '30', a compilation of various artists, 1977 LP, trk#2, produced by Jack Pelley of CHFX-FM, 101.9 Stereo, Halifax, NS, & Frank Lowe).

Ray Johnson noted that pawn me soul is an expression often used when in a particular predicament or situation, as when a grapnel is afoul which means it is not holding in the bottom of ocean.

Ray also informed GEST with regards to the song itself: "I often thought it necessary to let one's listener come to grips with the way in which this piece was written. Note the push and pull, if you like, of the way in which I'm singing the song. There's a form of hesitation in timing that strictly deals with the way the sea behaves. I felt, as people did in the past, to concentrate on rhythm in an informal sort of way. Having said that, it's important that the listener take into account this known fact."

From the Dictionary of Newfoundland English:
Baccy - tobacco.
Brewis - sea-biscuit or 'hard tack' soaked in water and then boiled; such a dish cooked with salt cod and fat pork.
Cantal - quintal; hundredweight (112 lbs); measure of cod-fish caught by fishermen.
Cuddy - cabin at the bow or stern of a small vessel or large boat for accommodation and provisions.
Grapnel - light anchor usually having four or more 'claws' to moor small boats and fixed or stationary fishing gear.
Gurry - fish offal; blood, slime, refuse from splitting cod-fish and handling fish offal.
Lop - rough surface of the sea caused by a stiff wind and marked by a quick succession of short breaking waves.
Man - certain pinnacle lined up with another land feature in order to locate a fishing ground or 'berth'.
Scoff - cooked meal at sea or ashore, especially at night and often part of an impromptu party; such a repast prepared with 'bucked' or stolen ingredients.
Sou'wester - fisherman's waterproof hat with a broad brim, elongated and sloping at the back, with side flaps tied under the chin; also south-wester, southwester, cape ann, lincoln, oil hat.
Trap skiff - large undecked fishing boat, propelled by oar, small sail, or engine and used in the coastal fishery to set and haul nets, especially cod traps.
Tumble - condition of the sea marked by a quick succession of large waves.
