The Kitchen Party (John Hollohan)

You can feel the excitement
as you walk through the door,
There's music and laughter
like I've heard before.
Well, come on in, my son,
and pull up a chair,
We're just getting started
and we're glad that you're here.

We were checking to see
if our strings were in key,
So pick up your squeeze box
and give us an E;
There'll be other musicians
dropping by soon,
So why don't we start off
with an old fashioned tune.

I've played in your
big city concert halls,
Looked down from the stage
through those colored bright lights;
Oh, but give me a warm home,
good friends, and music,
And a kitchen party
on a Saturday night.

There's guitars, a banjo,
and an old mandolin,
And a big ugly stick
that somebody brought in,
A harp, flute, a fiddle,
and accordions, too,
And most of the music
is strictly homebrew.

Now old skipper John's hands
are all crippled,
From too many years fishing
out on the sea;
But he still plays the flat top
like he was still thirty,
And can pick any song
without missing a key.

I've played in your
big city concert halls,
Looked down from the stage
through those colored bright lights;
Oh, but give me a warm home,
good friends, and music,
And a kitchen party
on a Saturday night.

Aunt Mini's dropped by
with her button accordion,
She's been playing now
since she was seven years old;
To watch her small fingers
fly over the buttons,
Is a musical treat
and a joy to behold.

So, parents, be sure
and teach your kids music,
Try and persuade them
whatever the cost;
Invite their friends
to sing and play with them,
Before this great part
of tradition is lost.

I've played in your
big city concert halls,
Looked down from the stage
through those colored bright lights;
Oh, but give me a warm home,
good friends, and music,
And a kitchen party
on a Saturday night.
