'Twas down by St John's Harbour
where first I chanced to stray,
Where in the dark, old, smelly mud
the seagulls called and played;
I watched the boats from foreign ports
come in against the tide,
And the sun shone down on
the Southside Hills
down by the harbourside.

On Water Street I spied a girl
and there we chanced to talk,
She smiled at me and gave a wink,
we set out for a walk;
Her cheeks were pink,
her eyes were blue,
she looked at me and sighed,
Sayin': You're the one
and my heart's been won
down by the harbourside.

Next Sunday morn on Patrick Street
we met with Father Lee,
He called the bans, I paid the man,
we signed the registry;
'Twas up the hill, a quick fee and chee,
'cause she was givin' me the eye,
So the whole afternoon was our honeymoon
down by the harbourside.

So now on Sunday morning
I walk with my four boys,
We watch the sailors at their work
while the children shout, "AHOY!"
I see them play on a holiday
but my heart is swole with pride,
My thoughts are clear, my love is near
down by the harbourside.
My thoughts are clear, my love is near
down by the harbourside.

####.... Adapted by Bob Hallett from Down By The Liffeyside, a ballad by Peadar Kearney ....####
Peadar Kearney [1883-1942] of Dublin, IE, was also the author of the lyrics to the national anthem of Ireland, A Soldier's Song.

This variant was adapted by Bob Hallett of Great Big Sea and recorded by Shanneyganock (Fling Out The Flag, trk#7, 2006 CD, Independent, produced by Bob Hallett).

Bob Hallett informs GEST that fee and chee is St John's slang for fish and chips.

The video above features a video made from Gerry Boland's film collection (Newfoundland and Labrador Journey - Shanneyganock and Gerry Boland, trk#13, 2010 DVD).

Liner Notes:
Long time friends Gerry Boland and Chris Andrews often talked about combining the music of Shanneyganock with highlights from the thousands of hours of video footage Gerry had filmed over the decades. Journey over land, sea and air, through the lens of Gerry Boland. Four decades of beautiful scenery showcasing Newfoundland and Labrador at its most majestic, natural and untouched.
