Under Captain William Hogarth,
the Marion Rogers left St John's,
Loaded with provisions,
her crew would soon be gone;
On November twenty-seventh
in nineteen thirty-eight,
Bound for Trinity with her cargo,
the Marion Rogers met her fate.
Early on the following morning
on the rocks she did veer,
With gale force winds and blinding snow,
the crew's vision was impaired;
The fog horn or a beacon
were nowhere to be heard or seen,
As the wind and snow intensified,
all hands remained serene.
With the lights and horn not working,
the tiny ship was tossed,
Crashing on the jagged rocks,
all hands on board were lost;
Seven gallant seamen died there in the sea,
The loss of the Marion Rogers
will go down in history.
Outside of Fort Point Lighthouse,
Marion Rogers had gone down,
The cries of those brave seamen
could be heard throughout the town;
With only minutes left to spare
they prayed to God on high:
Protect our families on the land
for we're about to die.
Two bodies were recovered,
five more brave souls were gone,
The church bell tolled in Trinity
for those that had passed on;
Those seven gallant seamen
on earth shall meet no more,
But all will reunite on heaven's peaceful shore.
With the lights and horn not working,
the tiny ship was tossed,
Crashing on the jagged rocks,
all hands on board were lost;
Seven gallant seamen died there in the sea,
The loss of the Marion Rogers
will go down in history.
