The band was founded around 1970 by it's leader, Fred, who was born in Coppett, Newfoundland in 1938, but moved to Ramea Island around Confederation time. Fred's brother Les was born on Ramea Island. They both moved to St Catharines, Ontario, where Fred co-hosted a show with Walter Ostanek on CJQR FM 97.7, St Catharines, called Down Home Country. Fred Northcotte succumbed to cancer in St Catharine's, Ontario on St Patrick's day, March 17, 2010, at the age of 72. He was very active and well loved by his fellow sailors at the Dalhousie Yacht Club where he was famous for his stories, music, nautical knowledge, and helping fellow members with personal problems and boat needs and repairs.
