Biographical Notes

Arthur Reginald Scammell [1913-1995], musician and songwriter from Change Islands, Notre Dame Bay, was named a member of the Order of Canada in 1988.
Squid Jiggin' Ground became Newfoundland's first local hit record when it sold 15,000 copies in 1943. Art Scammell composed it for a high school project in 1928 when he was 15 years old.
On April 1, 1949, the carillon in the Peace Tower in Ottawa played it as Canada welcomed Newfoundland into Confederation.
